This is by far the best Cambodian compilation I've ever listened to. Khmer music, in my opinion, has always sounded more complex than Thai pop and rock from the same era. Perhaps it has to do with the common knowledge of Cambodia's 20th century history, which is nearly impossible to mentally separate from its cultural exports. Cambodian (as well as Vietnamese) music tends to have a more wistful, unsettling quality. There is also a huge Hindu influence, which can be heard immediately. This particular compilation mixes together years of Cambodian music, with spoken words parts as well--in both Khmer and French.

And yes, of course, this is a Sublime Frequencies release. This compilation is definitely special because it both incorporates and moves past the Cambodian musical staples of Sinn Sisamouth, Pan Ron, Meas Samon, etc.
